Children will experience a broad curriculum through the study of English, Welsh, mathematics, science, design technology (DT), information communications technology (ICT), history, geography, art, music, physical education (PE) and religious education (RE). Personal and social education (PSE) is supported through programs that are linked to other curriculum areas, in particular science, and general health messages (such as washing hands after a toilet visit etc.) are reinforced on a regular, if not daily basis.
Environmental education is developed through the science, history and geography programs of study. Teaching and learning are enriched by visits in the locality where children form first hand experiences. Links exist with the LEA's Education Business Partnership, which has arranged key visits for children (a recent example being to Oldbury Nuclear Power Station). In addition this partnership has set up visits to the school by engineers and road shows to support learning in a range of areas (Mumbles 2000 for science and K'Nex Challenge for DT).
Visits to local supermarkets, places of worship, post offices, fire stations and recreational centres are also arranged by the school when appropriate to support classroom learning. These initiatives not only provide relevant contexts for learning, but they help establish effective partnerships with industry and the world of work.
Outside visitors are always welcome in the school. A program
of visitors from various charities and support organisations in
the community is established on a yearly (term in advance)
basis.
The school has regular visits from its community policeman.
Welsh is taught as a second language to all pupils. They are encouraged to practice using the language incidentally in school, for example to greet one another, staff and visitors.
The Curriculum Cymraeg is developed within the whole school curriculum to help instil the sense of Welsh identity within our pupils.
There is a school Eisteddfod each year on Saint David's Day, when children may wear traditional Welsh costume and compete in a wide range of events for their school houses.
The school is not affiliated to any particular religious
denomination, though studies do have a strong Christian element
and many concerts and events are linked to the Christian
calendar. We aim to encourage pupils to be tolerant and open
minded towards the beliefs of others. The daily act of collective
worship is a component of the social life of the school, and
plays an important role in the development of the children
participating.

The school has a structured homework program for all of its children. This program has two main components:
We see the daily practice of skills at home as a vital part of your child's learning. The longer written items enable your child to practice skills that will aid their learning in class.
Written homework will be set at the start of the school week, and should be returned completed at the end of that week. Parents are encouraged to support their children with these tasks, but advised to encourage them to complete as much of the work as they can without direct assistance. The time taken to complete each task will vary form child to child.
Support leaflets produced by the school on home reading and times tables are available on request.
Children are provided with both textbooks and workbooks by the school, but not pens, pencils, rubbers and rulers etc.
Your child may keep any completed workbooks, but must return textbooks when requested by the school. Lost or damaged books must be replaced.
Children have the opportunity to take part in a number of enjoyable and fulfilling activities throughout their time at school.
In addition to the activities listed above, please look in on the Social and Sports links (left)
Children's progress is monitored regularly during the year through on going teacher assessment according to National Curriculum Guidelines. Additional standardised tests in reading comprehension and mathematics are given annually.
Early years children are given baseline assessment within the first term of entry to the School. Findings are reported back to parents in a written report and a parent teacher consultation.
A record of achievement is collated for all pupils as they progress through the School.
This is carried out at the end of each National Curriculum Key
Stage, these occur in years two and six. The results from this
assessment are made available to parents, Governors, the LEA and
the Welsh Assembly.
A guide to this school's results is presented in the written
prospectus
